Salisbury Plain, South Georgia Island
Salisbury Plain is situated in a glacial outwash on the south shore of the Bay of Isles. It is the largest expanse of level ground on South Georgia Island. Shockingly, in 1984, it was considered as an aircraft landing site. One of South Georgia's largest elephant seal populations breeds here, along with a large colony of breeding fur seals. Seals were hunted here until the end of sealing in 1964. King penguins are everywhere, as far as the eye can see, and It is estimated that as many as 12,000 King Penguins are here during their molting season. The breeding cycle of King Penguins here may take over 12 months, with the mature King Penguins being over 3' tall and averaging 26 pounds. They travel at almost 8 mph and frequently dive to about 160 feet for about 8 minutes. A dive to 1,000 feet has been recorded, and they can travel up to 350 miles up and down the South Georgia Island coast.
