Grytviken, South Georgia Island
Grytviken ("Pot Cove" in Norwegian and Swedish), was named after sealers' trypots found at the site. The sheltered harbor lies within King Edward Cove, South Georgia Island. Grytviken is still the seat of British government administration, located at King Edward Point. Grytviken has been the center of human activity in South Georgia Island since 1904. In December 1904, the first whale was processed at Grytviken. By the time of the whaling stations closure in December 1964, over 54,000 whales had been processed, and up to 300 men were employed there.
