Cooper Bay, South Georgia Island
Cooper Bay, at the southeast extremity of South Georgia Island enjoys a spectacular location in the lee of the glaciers of the Salvesen Range. The Bay is on the south facing slope of a peninsula between the Twitcher and Salomon Glaciers. Cooper Island provides protection from the open Southern Ocean.
This spectacular location provides a wealth of wildlife. The penguin colonies include Chinstrap, Macaroni, King, and Gentoo species. There are Elephant Seals and Fur Seals breeding on all three of the main beaches in Cooper Bay. In addition, Giant Petrels, Blue Eyed Shags, and Sooty Albatrosses breed here. There are steep Tussac Slopes and rock outcroppings which form a sheer rock amphitheater above the three beaches. The Lichen is multicolored and spectacular.
In November 2010, the Prince Albert II anchored offshore and we did an extensive Zodiac cruise of Cooper Bay. The resultant photographs here bear witness to this spectacular site.
